Life after consulting?

I have had several colleagues who left for other consulting firms tell me that ours is really great to work at by comparison. We have a really awesome work culture even if it is incredibly high-stress and draining. So I think consulting just isn't for me.

My gf works as a regulator for the local state DEQ and it sounds like a nightmare job for me, honestly. Granted we have very, very different levels of work ethic, but I digress... I mostly just don't want to feel bored and un-challenged, which is where I'm at right now. Not sure if a regulator position necessarily fits that bill, at least based on what I've heard.

I'm not entirely discounting industry work - I think it's mostly just people I know who work as EHS managers in industrial plants and it sounds pretty horrible; long hours, shitty boring work, corporate goons constantly breathing down your neck, workmans comp paperwork, etc... so something outside of that realm definitely sounds cool.
