Just to throw out something that isn't as well know but also isn't bad, Shadow Beast Shifters by Jaymin Eve. She's no or Seanan McGuire or Patricia Briggs but it's still readable and fun. The first 3 books are about the same characters and the 4th is about two side characters, but the trilogy is a complete story and you can 100% stop there.

The Fever series by Karen Marie Moaning has nontraditional shifters and is really good. It definitely has a romance subplot but it's a slow burn and the main story is really interesting. Eventually the series does start having a lot more sexy time and flipping between protagonists but that's not until like book 5 or 6 and they're all like 500 pages long so... Worth it.
