Yes, I would be surprised if the narrative wasn’t being shaped in a way that may exaggerate the violations in areas, but it seems pretty clear to me that violations exist. The degree to which it is intentional versus unintentional is also an important discussion.

This is similar to the protests in Russia. Putin is without question anti-Democratic in his leadership, but Navalny has a very troubling streak of Russian ethno-nationalism and association with far-right actors. It’s concerning to see him lead what is ostensibly a pro-democracy protest. However, the media tends to not cover his troubling ideology and associations and molds his image more as a heroic martyr for democratic rights.
