MSPU Editorial: Microsoft is doing a great job defending Windows

I like Leo and he makes some sense but from my point of view hes hurting computer users by pushing his agenda too much. He really came down hard on the desktop too hard. Its dangerous and reckless.

A chrome book is useless. To suggest anyone buy one is just insane. As a PC user, 40 years old that has used everything since he was a child...

THE LAST THING I WANT is a chrome book. Its useless. But from my point of view, i'm a 3d artist professionally. I use computers to their fullest. Sadly this trend of the general public being pushed towards cheap, useless chromebook/ios/android type devices is dangerous to the health of computing.

Yes its true grandma doesnt need a dual 16 core xeon workstation, but Leo is stupid to be advocating the general public move towards these limited devices that have so little potential because it just makes the entire industry of computers more expensive for everyone else. The focus doesnt become about performance and improvement. It doesnt focus on power and capability, it then starts to deliver "enough power for grandma" and frankly that is going to make everything cost significantly more for people who want more from their computers and we will see less progress in areas of peformance. We see this with intel firing a ton of people. We see this with intels xeon prices. We've seen this with GPUs. Gamers wont be happy, artists wont be happy, programmers wont be happy with this. Anyone producing any kind of content wont be. A computer isnt a fucking facebook machine and if thats the vision Leo has for computing, then we're all doomed.

The only thing thats saving the pc is PC Gaming. Leo suggests the Xbox is enough. ITS NOT. The Xbox One is DEAD to pc gamers. Its obsolete as far as I'm concerned. a PC is far more capable and upgradable. But even gaming isnt bring xeon performance to the mainstream. Intel is holding performance back from the mainstream. You can pay $1000 for an extreme chip like I do, or buy xeons but... intel really has no incentive to deliver performance as more and more people shift towards the chrome books Leo is advocating, and gaming isnt going to push hard enough to save computing as we know it for enthusiasts (people that enjoy computers, believe they should be as fast and as capable as possible).

Leo is advocating the masses stick to simple devices and the death of windows and desktop computing as we know it. To me this the same as saying to humanity "be stupid and aspire to be nothing more". I think there is room for both and I think Microsoft is ahead at trying to balance this out. Unifying desktop/tablet/phone is the best bet we have at saving the computing as we knew it growing up. Our computing experience needs to be mobile, and tied into our desktops so we can move from simple devices to complex devices when needed, seamlessly. Microsoft needs to get this right!

I'll continue to buy REAL PCs because I use them for work and gaming. I grew up with the vic20, c64, apple2e, 286, 386, sgi, 486,dual pentium pros to where we are, and never once was I satisified with a 2GB of ram android tablet in the year 2000 when I grew up knowing every bit of ram and cpu power mattered. I cringe when i see a Surface with 4GB of ram. Microsoft should be ashamed for 4GB of ram in 2016. This race to the bottom is ruining the PC. This mentality that we can do with less, will leave us with less.

Be careful what you ask for Leo.

I'll end with this. I bought the $50 Amazon 7 inch tablet to have a cheap tablet because thats all I feel android tablets are worth. I've seen too many people drop their $300+ tablets 1 month later to destroy them completely to place any value on them. They under perform, they are all limited in capability. They arent worth anything to me. Sure, if i want to read reddit on the toilet, or netflix on a plane... I have a tablet. A Tablet btw that I hacked, and replaced the entire shitty amazon android OS, with a clean, basic android OS image, and now it runs far better than it did stock with the amazon garbage on it. To me this proves that selling toasters to users is not in the best interest of the user. Leo better rethink what he is advocating. Even he put linux on his chromebook pixel!

Hes openly admitted he hates microsoft and windows time and time again, perhaps hes not the best host for a windows show, but I do like the challenge of impressing him, and frankly Microsoft needs to step up their game because there is a lot that needs work. We wouldnt be in this situation if Microsoft had not let their game slip for so damn long. So I hope thats a lesson to Microsoft. I know it takes time to catchup when you're playing from behind and I think they're on the right path but its time to start getting things right, and fast. Or get ready to buy facebook computers, and chromebooks. yuck.
