Children will understand it as a grand adventure story told through the eyes of a dog. Based on London s experiences as a gold prospector in the Canadian wilderness and his ideas about nature and the struggle for existence, The Call of the Wild is a tale about unbreakable spirit and the fight for survival in the frozen Alaskan Klondike.more Bernard, half Shepard), is a dog born to luxury and raised in a sheltered Californian home. On January 26, 1903, Jack London submitted the completed manuscript of The Call of the Wild to the Saturday Evening Post. In fact, Buck pulls a 1,000 pound sled to win John a bet. As I was rewarmed by the might of Nature the other day, this time the love. Posted By babyno1 at Sun 29 Oct 2006, 4:17 AM in Call of the Wild || 0 Replies My opinion on the book is quite a strong one. We are first introduced to Buck as the great dog - loyal, strong, and protective - as seen domesticated in everyday life. But he is more than that, as is every dog, as we see him not transform - but revert back to natural instincts as he truly responds to his call to the wild. It seems more relevantly his mordant parable of the thinness of civilisation, the brutality ready to spring up through our institutions, the failure of the human race to evolve truly from its primeval beginnings. It derives from Jack London s Marxism the idea of the material control of our natures, and from his Darwinism the convictions that life triumphant belongs to the most fit. This is not a sweet idea for a book, it is rather the kind of concept to justify tyrannies and the need of repressive social institutions to keep people from tearing themselves to bits. But London s Nietzchean superdog has our admiration, if the truth be told. For as grim as its implications are, the tale never forgets its sources as a magazine frontier romance. I couldn t feel the soul of The Call of the Wild. Maybe I ve seen to many struggling people in this world to root for one single animal. Where Martin Eden was an amazing book, The Call of the Wild did not manage to capture me as a reader. Considering how many people worship this book, maybe the fault is in me. I don t know if I ve ever actually read a Jack London story before.
