New to this sub and have no MA experience, but why does everyone make fun of Wing Chun?

I have practiced Wing Chun. This is what I think about Wing Chun's criticisms.

Alot of people think there's no sparring in Wing Chun. There is sparring in real Wing Chun. There are also many partner drills because Wing Chun has many dirty techniques and advanced practitioners don't want to serious hurt one another practicing. There's also no official Wing Chun competitions which is another large source of criticism.

Comparing Wing Chun to other arts is like comparing apples to oranges. One is designed specifically for street fighting and the use of weapons, the other is designed for competitions. Wing Chun doesn't translate well to the world of competition but if you threaten the life of someone who practices good Wing Chun life in a back alley you will understand exactly what Wing Chun is for.

Wing Chun also doesn't have a lot of ground game, but that also depends on the teacher. I know chunners who have practiced some BJJ because BJJ mixes very well with Wing Chun. Judo would also work well with Wing Chun. Wing Chun is more of a kick boxing system with some grappling rather than a complete ground fighting system.

My final point, good Wing Chun is rare. Not only is it rare, but good Wing Chun is taught traditionally which is very unfriendly to those who don't speak Cantonese or Mandarin. As an english speaker when I learned Wing Chun there was a ton of terms and translations you had to learn to master the art and learn more than just the basics. It was a big turn off for me personally. Tradition wouldn't have it any other way either so only serious students can master the art. And because they only want serious students most places would have you sign a yearly contract which is bs in the eyes of most people.

This is why Wing Chun gets shit in in my opinion. A lot of the shit it gets is exaggerated, some of it is deserved. I wish people would look more at Wing Chun is rather than chunners themselves because the art itself has a lot of good stuff in it and in my view isn't taught as well as it could be.
