One user claims rape culture doesn't exist in the west. Goes exactly like you'd expect.

I am a sceptic of it and I've been meaning to ask somebody about this. So the argument for it existing is put by scott alexander here,

  1. Society treats rape as less horrendous and more excusable than other crimes
  2. The criminal justice system is unusually loaded in favor of rape suspects and against victims
  3. People are more willing to blame rape victims than victims of other crimes
  4. Misogyny in society causes sexual objectification of women, which latently condones/promotes rape
  5. The general tolerance of rape is a sign that society is biased against women and doesn’t care about their problems

People always cite stubenville as an example, but imo the term is implying that this is specific to that crime and not just a feature of social dynamics around crime in general. The guys in that football team could've done a lot of bad stuff to anyone who was lower down on the social scale than them and their would've been the same reaction. People who were popular at my school beat the shit out of some poor kid for looking at them the wrong way and people excused them because they were popular.

When you look at the figures it's not out of line with other crimes in a lot of measures, in the UK (as shown in that slatestarcodex link) the conviction rate is not out of line with other crimes, and from the US apparently (pdf warning) "rape acquittal (56%) is statistically in line with all other felonies (57%)". What is out of line is reporting, but even then there is some stuff that doesn't tie into the narrative, according to a crime study in the UK (which I can find if asked) there is a higher percentage of victims that report the crime themselves when compared to GBH (serious assault) which is reported by witnesses and friends more often, it is reasonable to conclude from this that it is just the nature of the crime and it occurring mostly in private with no witnesses, that results in the higher rate of non reporting.

I'm kind of ambivalent on the stuff people were saying in that thread about guys seeing themselves as 'getting' girls and people being ok with some things that would be considered bad, these are open to interpretation but there seems to be no evidence for them either way.

Where I do agree 100% is with police and justice system treatment of people reporting, which is often awful and makes everything worse, but another thing that came out of the Rotherham (and other) sex abuse scandal in the UK is that this is often class based (and elsewhere obviously happens with other crimes) and seems to follow existing patterns of who is socially valuable in that part of the country, if you are a guy reporting getting beaten up you will get similarly badly treated.
