[Discussion] Change my view? I don't trust pit bulls anymore. My husky was attacked, then I was.

Unfortunately, I have a relevant story...

I own a wolf hybrid (husky/mal/wolf) who I try to socialize as much as possible so she's friendly to all people and dogs. (Disclaimer to those with negative assumptions:) No I didn't buy her from a breeder, she's from family. I live in a rural area and have done extensive reaserch on their behavior. She is well trained, has plenty of space to roam safely, and I take her everywhere with me including lots of backpacking. Anyone with a conflicting opinion on hybrid ownership can keep it to themselves as it has nothing to do with the intent of the post.

Anyways, we were walking past a bus stop a couple months ago when I noticed a small pit mix with an agressive stance. I redirected my pups path to my right side, as the pit was on the left and mine can be too eager to meet new dogs sometimes; all with the assumption that the owner had a hold of the leash.

Nope. The little shit charged my dog and grabbed onto her side. Unfortunately I knew someone with two extremely intelligent dogs, one pit/lab another pit/collie; who would have to older collie bully the lab untill one day the lab snapped and attacked the collie viciously. As you sadly experienced firsthand, pitbulls have lockjaw and you either jam ther gums into their teeth, pry their mouth, or stick your finger up their butt to get them to release. The guy had to do all of that to his lab, and that was my first thought when my pup was attacked.

Fortunately, my dog was quick and he didn't get a good grip. I grabbed his collar and held his face to the pavement while I layed on him with my dead weight. I still had my dog by the leash, who was trying to run away, when the pits caretaker (350 pound homeless dude) tried to waddle up to control his dog. He was wasted and fell on his face; while pittie almost slipped the collar to go after mine again. My buddy caught up and grabbed my dogs leash. I wrestled the pit grabbed his scruff and handed him off to the heroin addict who was with the dude. I got up with a scraped up/banged up everything from restraining it, and told him he was lucky I wasn't about to call animal control because I didn't get bit and my dogs skin wasn't punctured. They insisted the dog had never done such a thing while I tried to help the drunk dude up, as he needed a cane. All of my cash fell out of my pocket and I had sich a rush of adrenaline that I couldn't think straight and assumed it was his. I didn't want to rob him but some elderly onlooker was kind enough to pick it up and return it to me.

I'm really sorry to hear about you and your dog, but my point is that sometimes it's just the combination of crappy training, unpredictable behavior, and being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I won't try to convince you to like pitbulls, I have severe anxiety issues and also cross the street when I see any dog approaching. I've just come to accept that no matter how cautious you are there is always a variable that you can't foresee. It caused her to be fearful of new dogs and worsened her leash aggression for a little bit. She's better now though, I haven't been attacked so I can't give advice on that. I will say that it could happen with any breed of dog and more likely is the other owners fault for bringing an unsocialized pitbull to the park. I think talking to a counselor or therapist might be more beneficial than any advice we can give you, if you can afford that or are able to include that in a settlement with the pits owner that is. Hope your husky is ok physically and mentally, and that someday you can find a way to move past it too!
