Overwhelming situations - any explanations? Anyone?

Last minute changes (especially without warning) can be super frustrating. I think your family means well, however, comments like “you’re being childish” seem unproductive.

Maybe you can communicate to your family that you need more support in this area.

Is there a word or phrase they can use, to help or comfort you during the more difficult transitions? For example, instead of saying “you’re acting childish”, they can say something like “I know this was unexpected, but we’re here to support you every step of the way”.

I think flexibility must go both ways. If you’re being flexible by going to your newly arranged appointment, maybe they can push the time back by 15 minutes, so you can mentally adjust to the “new plan”.

Finally, when really strong feelings come up, are you able to ask for some space? Or find an activity (even if it’s really small) that helps calm your mind?

I like to:

  • ask for space
  • walk away and start counting the number of tiles in the room
  • quick exercise, 5-10 push ups
  • 2-1 breathing exercises (two quick breaths in and 1 out)

Not sure if any of that helped, but feel free to DM if you need someone to vent with :)!
