Parents of autistic children, what is one thing you wish people would understand about parenting a child with autism?

I’ve never watched the Big Bang Theory but was an academically gifted kid with Asperger’s and OCD.

And, y’all, it’s not quirky or fun. I get that the OCD stuff is kind of “weird” or “kooky” from outside, but to that person obsessively cleaning or checking it feels like hell and you want more than anything to stop but can’t.

I often find out I’m being rude about 15 minutes after I’ve really hurt someone I care about. And, I often care deeply about others but feel unable to show it.

That sucks.

Yes, there are people with zero insight who are rude and truly never realize they’ve been hurtful, but that’s hard and isolating in it’s own way.
