Pentax Full Frame Reality Check

I'm frankly glad to see videos like this. I want people to be doubting the camera before it comes out, without a shred of evidence to knock them into negative-attitude talk. And I get what he's saying... but seriously he hasn't thought this one through clearly.

I don't know if a FF is ever in my future, but I know I've got 8 lenses ready for it. And it won't cost me his cited figure of $6k to make a damn unbeatable kit.

Take a look at my discount lens lineup really quick for a FF kit. Rokinon ultrawide 14mm f/2.8 $275 new. Promaster AF lens 19-35mm , $100 used. SMC 50mm f/1.2, $200 used. Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 HSM II, $600 from KEH. So a full bag which will let me shoot whatever I want, very reliably, with exceptional sharpness, from astro shots through midrange telephoto stuff for under $1,200. Throw in the amazing deal on the DFA100 macro WR lately and it's a do-everything kit.

Now I know exactly how much I can get out of my K-5iis's iso capabilities, and how much highlights or shadows I can recover in post. A FF and killer sensor inside will ramp that way up. Even if his meager single-digit IQ improvement claim is true, he's may not be considering the flexibility of a FF image in less-than-stellar environments. That's what a FF is for.

I don't know if he doesn't know the brand or doesn't like it. But to say that since this is Ricoh's first rodeo, and that the Pentax guys that have delivered quality and value, camera after camera, are getting pushed over? That's totally baseless. Ricoh is giving Pentax new life, and not just in terms of money. I look at what they've put in the K-3ii, and with the rumored features, I think Ricoh is unleashing Pentax, not shackling them.
