Perfumer recommends 20 sprays after cautioning against overspraying!?

I'm new to perfumes and the ones in the discovery kits I've tested so far were mostly very strong. With some perfumes one spray is already too much in the first hour. Two sprays nearly always suffice. I can clearly smell the (usually kind of boring) base notes of most perfumes a day later after having taken two showers. If something gets on the clothing, not even washing in the washing machine removes the smell. I've also had problems with the smell seeping out of the bottles, even though I keep the samples in a supposedly airtight box.

That's also why I don't get why so many people want super long lasting fragrances. I understand that they want value for money and the quality of stronger concentrations is higher, but if a perfume lasts 8 hours as a non-skin scent the way you spray it, then there is no way it isn't too strong during the first two hours.
