I understand the need to shift to a steady stream of income to support the steady stream of updates needed. When the software is growing a 1 time payment model can work, as new users are rolling in, and it allows you to capture as much income from them as quickly as possible, and now that the landscape has changed, I am guessing the population of users has stabilized, and now the company is left with software to support, but no resources avaliable to support the prior promise made. I totally get that, I probably would have offered a few more months free to users (6 months), but likely any number of months would result in upset lifetime members.

My opinion is that the Playon software is lacking in its recording options compared to some of its competitors (I suspect this is intentional due to legal nuances around capturing a screen vs downloading the associated files), however excels in its subscription system, do you plan on improving the subscription system (maybe let people subscribe to a show not just a season), or allow people to subscribe to a show, and Playon will determine the channel to source it from, or what changes/improvements do you see coming for the next 12 months in the subscription space.
