Public goods and business models, the problem leverages for payment

This is an interesting contribution. It forces me to make my own proposals more explicit. You are right to concentrate on how we can generate value within decentralized networks. However, I find you are still too caught up in older economic paradigms. My position is to shift the perception of value from private-rivalrous to common-public goods. The former-particular which is of limited value is parasitic on the latter-universal which is of measureless value; it is not a natural or rational arrangement. In other words, it generates negative externalities in the form of frozen assets, monopolies of force, degenerate commodities, and predatory human values. It hoards physical resources, mechanical innovations, and human labor and denies us our collective heritage. All of this is a consequence of one-sided materialist values and paternalistic ideology.

What we require is a realistic spiritual revolution in human consciousness and technological liberation. Concretely this means we start valuing our computational resources, our moral dignity, our intellectual creativity, and our political voice. We start valuing our contributions to the common good and prevent the past from consuming the future. We can do this by finding new ways of expressing our values in the medium of digital publics and the symbolic capital such publics enable. So-called exclusive or rivalrous goods are enframed in incentive structures that prey on people’s vulnerability and desire for acceptance. As sources of value they are scarcely limited and relative to subjective preference. They signify arbitrary conventions that no longer serve us. There is no necessary reason to consent our autonomy to these values and ways of life. There is no necessary reason to recognize the sanctions or institutions that perpetuate them. As the scales fall from our eyes their authority will evaporate. Thus we join together in the spirit of cosmopolitan solidarity – across nations - to create a higher order of value and legitimacy. We displace the old system with a global decentralized civilization.

We need to realize that we are the ones, i.e. humanity as historic totality, who are responsible for determining the nature of ownership and the values such ownership implies. What we’ve learned from the experiment with bitcoin is that network effects and ubiquitous faith in our undertakings can produce enormous stores of value that can displace other stores of value. There is nothing intrinsically useful in bitcoin besides the trust invested in it by its users. For this reason there is nothing in principle to prevent the possibility of a currency with purely ‘phantom’ value – purely moral, political, or spiritual significance – from acquiring economic and socio-political power. This possibility will lead us to create a technological system that allows everyone to invest each other with the shared value and utility of their collaborations. It will enable us to build ethical principles into our infrastructures that prevent accumulated capital from exploiting our general will. In this way we will generate the symbolic wealth necessary to shift the perception of value from private-rivalrous to common-public goods. We will all converge on this solution eventually. I’m merely stating the logical consequences.

If we stand together as citizens of a unified social order, outside the influence of centralized powers, we will force world governments and corporations to devolve back into public hands. This will promote heavy social stigmas and profound cultural stress on those who perpetuate social arrangements that are destructive of our shared objectives. In fact, the only thing that can pose a threat to us at that point is the possibility of ecological catastrophe, tyrannical control of our means of communication, or the threat of global militarized holocaust. Given the nature of religious fanaticism, this may be something to worry about. At any rate, this is likely some decades away. In the end we will be victorious and we will begin ruling ourselves in federated syndicates. That is no other way forward for human freedom.
