Questions for Pre-Med Students

Hi! Class of ‘22 here!

So to start with your first question, I was into theater in high school, but not as heavily as some. Like 1-3 productions a year. I mainly did community theater since my own school’s program lacked good management. I ran cross country my senior year and made varsity by the end of the season, and was Vice President in NHS my junior-senior years, and secretary of the student body my senior year. Basically backended all my extracurriculars. But I don’t think it was any of these that got me in. What I really think got me in were my essays about growing up poor. I think Duke looks for socioeconomic diversity in the same way they look for racial, ethnic, gender etc. diversity. Because otherwise, I wasn’t particularly specialized in anything.

Secondly, I’m hoping to get my degree in Environmental Science and a minor in evolutionary anthropology. So yes, you can major and minor, or even double major if you’re ambitious. I’m in the Army ROTC program, which limits my ability to take as many classes as I’d like and I still think I’ll be able to accomplish all I need to.
