Reddit, I want to introduce you to person first language. The vast amount of posts of people with disabilities doing amazing things here on Reddit, does not have the correct and respectful language that is accepted by the greater community of people with disabilities. I think we owe them that.

That is totally your choice. I would say that's a stretch to say I/others use this language to make ourselves more comfortable with your existence, I actually think that's kind of the wrong way for you to think about it. In my graduate program we work with and are taught by people and professors with disabilities daily who advocate STRONGLY for person first language. I don't think we would all be busting our butts conducting research and joining a rehab profession if we were uncomfortable with your existence... I do think that many many able-bodied people are uncomfortable with people with disabilities, however I would argue the great majority of the people who actually utilize person first language are able-bodied people who probably have more contact with people with disabilities than others..

Is there anything that makes you feel that way in particular? Like any examples? I'm pretty fascinated by your statement, I never imagined person-first language could seem selfish or patronizing. Thanks for your comment!
