Remco Evenepoel will ride the 2020 Giro d'Italia

Remco Evenepoel confirmed to La Gazzetta dello Sport that he will ride the Giro this year. For the young Belgian this will be his first Grand Tour. "The opening Time Trial? Everything is possible on a good day", says Deceuninck-Quick Steps golden boy.

Remco Evenepoel didn't want to confirm his Giro d'Italia start a while ago, but in an interview with La Gazzetta he spoke with clear words: "Yes, I will start. This is a great honour. It will be the start Grand Tour of my hopfully long career. I cannot wait", Evenepoel tells us in the Italian sport newspaper.

"In August, after I got confirmation to ride the Olympics, the idea was launched. The Giro will be a very important step in my preparation towards Tokyo. The Olympic Time Trial is a big goal of mine. I can test my limits in the Giro d'Italia because the last stage race I've done so far was 9 days".

"I gonna start without stress and without clear ambitions. The intention is to gain experience. Of course I will give it my very best. Maybe I will ride 2 weeks, maybe 3 weeks, or maybe 10 days, if I'm felling empty. I don't want to kill myself".

"I'm good against the clock, but it's less than 10 km, while I'm better suited to longer Time Trials. But on a good day, everything is possible".

"Italia is a pro cycling country, just like Belgium, and the Giro is full of spectacle. Maybe it's the only Grand Tour where you can't predict what will happen. Each day everything can change. That works great for the morale and I love that".
