Review 13: Speyburn 10

Speyburn 10 year old 43% abv, 30 USD in Maryland Color: Dark Apple juice. Nose: Creamy, vanilla, oranges, peaches, big hit of honey, malt, a white dessert wine note. Kind of reminds me of some sweet ice wines I've had in the past. Tas te: A light but creamy mouthfeel, almost like a skim milk. No burn whatsoever. Very fruit forward, this is one of the first scotches I've had that I've picked up on a very clear stone fruit note. Peaches, honey, vanilla, some light hay and grass notes. Malt, light wood. Clearly young but a precise and lively palate. Finish: Wine like, grape skins, minerals, cinnamon, more honey and malt. Overall 87/100. I freely admit the insane value of this single malt biases my review in its favor. For five dollars more than a blend, you get a 10 year old single malt that has great, distinct flavors and a refreshing light but lingering finish. It's not great because it's 30 dollars, I would still buy it at 40 to 50. If someone is scared of heavy peaty scotch flavors, give them this. I would compare this to Glenmorangie 10, but better, less thin and less expensive. Its a little too light in the flavor department to put in a cocktail like a Manhattan or Blood and Sand, but it goes great with some carbonated water or in a sour. Coke drowns it, but Sprite and Ginger ale work well. For the price, you get an excellent single malt that you can mix with guilt free. I think this would be excellent in a Collins type cocktail with rosemary or ginger infused simple syrup in the spring and summer too. Some people equate age and price as a direct correlation with quality, and they are limiting themselves by not giving scotches like this a chance. That being said I would love to see a 14 or 16 year old version of this, any older though and I would worry the barrel would influence the spirit too much. If a 15 year old came up for anything under 80 dollars I would buy it immediately.
