So, serious question

There is a big difference between a Pop Music(the genre, not just "popular music") fan(someone who would be active on r/popheads and goes beyond "top 40") and someone who mindlessly consumes radio music. I can't answer the latter but I can answer the former.

It's a very simple case of it is good music. Every artist in the 60s wasn't on par with the Beatles, there was no doubt some total shit on the charts. Same case nowadays except it isn't handed to you on a silver platter like music that stood the test of time is, can't stand the test of time if time hasn't passed.

But... My favorite Pop album from recently would probably be Dedicated by Carly Rae Jepsen. Julien is a fantastic song. It's catchy, nice lyrics, I like the production etc etc.

Others would be...

Charli XCX - Charli

I'm mildly mixed on this album and can't tell if I just like it or love it... but It's pretty good overall. I like the Bubblegum Bass/PC Music style so...

Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia

It's not amazing but it's pretty good if not great. Levitating has been stuck in my head as of recently. I do wish it had more SynthWave influence beyond aesthetic...

But those should give you a general idea of what I(or other people) like about (some)modern pop.

On Modern Hip-Hop...

Plenty of good releases recently, uhh Denzel Curry's new album was pretty good. Die Lit was great imo, Igor was great... etc etc... I haven't heard a single Logic song lmao so I don't know besides other people saying it's shit.

But I assume you mean "mumble rap"... Here is the problem with Mumble Rap... nothing.

Mumble Rap hate is a case of people wanting a genre to be something it isn't, and then getting pissy about it. Mumble Rap is supposed to be fun and easy to vibe to, it isn't supposed to be SpIrItUaL lYrIcAl MiRaCle Hip-Hop. Also, I don't think I've heard a single "Mumble Rap" song besides Gucci Gang which was fine, not sure why people got so pissy over a song so painfully obvious that it was meant to not be taken seriously but whatever. Is Die Lit "mumble rap", not sure but whatever?

Also, why don’t you guys ever branch out your music tastes?

I... do... Here is my RYM if you're curious

So what makes it so special to everyone else but not me?

It's fine to not like what's popular. It doesn't really make you special or... "un"-special... it just make you... you(ha how cheesy)

And look at all those ellipses haha
