Smashbox Mega Discussion Thread

Just got done watching Blurr's and the other videos and I want to chime in. One of Blurs arguments was that the game was balanced around a gamecube controller and even to remap say B to A or Z would be an unfair advantage. I think that is ridiculous. First of all, Melee was not designed at all around competitive play. Perfect ledge dashes, multishining, wavedashing, pretty much any advance tech wasnt really part of Nintendos design. Hell, even the 4 stock/no items/and limited stages in competitive play wasnt part of nintendos design this was created by people dedicated to the smash scene and NOT nintendo.

If we look at sports, there's always improvements and new technology. Look at the evolution of tennis rackets over the past decades, or the evolution in technology that allows you to practice tennis at a high level. Or in table tennis the improvement of rackets, you basically have to invest hundreds of dollars in gear (or get sponsored) to compete at the highest level in those sports, as well as golf and any other technical game. That is actually a good thing for sports to have a market for small things meant to give you an advantage. It brings money to the sport. Let's face it, things like hitbox is what smash needs because it will bring money to the scene.. They will obviously want to sponsor players or hell even sponsor events.

When I first played Melee, I was actually frustrated at the controllers lay out. I'm use to PC games where there's a lot of customization. I wanted to remap say X to grap since I mainly use Y to jump and then remap Z, I wonder to try different things out because it's clear the game cube controller at default settings has limitations. If you have issues sliding from Y to be for whatever reason, maybe you have small hands or big hands, or you broke your thumb in the past, who knows, but not being able to mess with other button lay outs actually limits the game and is impedes the progression of the game.

And to say that these limitations are fine because everyone has to deal with it.. I disagree because again people have different hand sizes, brought up by other people should you ban claw grip or penhold grip with the joystick?

And a bit of a tangent on Blur, I think what this guy needs is a time machine to go back to the Ken era.
