Some episodes of "I Love Lucy" ended with Ricky spanking Lucy. Was this really such an accepted practice within marriage in the 1950s that it could be made light of in mainstream media or was this considered humorous because it was seen as ridiculous behavior pattern between a man and wife?

I'm interested in this because I noticed a trend in country music from this time period that involves men calling themselves 'daddy' to their girlfriend or wife. For example, Johnny Cash refers to himself as being a girl's daddy in "Cocaine Blues," and Hank Williams, Sr. makes similar references in songs like "I'm a Long Gone Daddy" as well.

I wonder if these concepts are related in the 20th century view because husbands stepped into roles that father left behind after marriage? That would possibly connect in that they felt they had the right to discipline their wife/girlfriend through something like spanking, leading it to be popularized in shows like I Love Lucy? I could be way off the mark but I'm interested to find out.
