Surrendering old license plate - is it really required?

If you dropped the insurance from the old car, and still own that car, then YES, I would, unless you find an exception written in there. That or you plan on waiting for the letter if its sent, then going and complying with the order. Call 850.617.2000 at . like 7am (seriously), and ask them if you can. If they don't give you a loop-hole, then they're serious...

FL does NOT screw around with insurance and registration. They have a computer program that automatically flags you as soon as you drop it, and they send a letter to you. If you don't comply by the 2 weeks or whatever that they give you, then kiss your license good bye. And its not cheap to have it reinstated.

Let me put to you this way: I recently had a day temp tag that was given to me. I registered in another state. Despite a DMV lady claiming that I wouldn't have issues like I would with a metal-plate, I got the letter in the mail. The State really isn't kidding you, they're Nazi's about this.
