Switching to Tegretol (Carbamazepine) for Type 2 TN

Honestly type 2 really sucked when it first started. It was the fall of 2019, and just one day I realized I had a headache that just wouldn’t go away. That lasted for about 3 months and it got to the point that I was just laying on my couch everyday in excruciating pain. It put me in such a horribly bad headspace, I honestly felt out of control of my thoughts at times. I

finally went to the doctor and that’s when he put me on Topamax and that just murdered my energy. That started a long process to get doctors to listen to me and quit blaming it on my migraines. (I completely cured my migraines by switching to decaf coffee and avoiding caffeine all together.) That got to the point that I started looking into the anatomy of the trigeminal nerve, then going to the doctor and saying, “look, it follows the maxillary branch exactly.” Then getting another doctor to get the MRI which proved I have a blood vessel pressing on the right side.

But I was put on gabapentin just a few months ago and I finally feel 90% back to normal, but there are some days I let it get to me. I miss exercising but the thought of all intense activities makes my head hurt thinking of it. And sometimes I get short tempted with people because my head hurts, which sucks all In it’s self.

But to answer your question (sorry for the book) The pain is on my right side, right behind my eye and nasal cavity, it travels down to my teeth, right temple and sometimes my forehead. Smelling cold air makes it hurt a little, if I hold my head in a certain position for a while I can go from felling ok to being in pain. And the pain is almost like a strong pressure inside of my head.
