Teamwork

I was a helper for a guy who had a well drilling rig. We would first drill a hole 420 feet down, about 16 inches wide or so and then run 6" pipe down the center. My job then was to stand at the pile of wet sand/dirt about 20 feet from the hole where it was pumped out with a shovel and toss a shovel full of wet sand/dirt at the 6" pipe, trying to land it directly at the holes entrance to get it all into the hole. At the beginning of this, there was a delayed thump I would hear about 8 seconds after it started down the hole to the time it hit the bottom. As the day went on, that thump came sooner and sooner until I had filled up the 420' X 16"(minus the 6" pipe down the center) hole. It took probably about 6 hours of tossing wet sand/dirt with a shovel 20 or so feet through the air to fill one drilled well. The rig operator would disappear somewhere for those hours, and come back to pick me up around the time the sun was going down. I did that job for about two weeks, and he stiffed me for roughly half of what I earned. I'll never work a job that has anything to do with a shovel, or throwing anything over and over for hours and hours, ever again.
