Extremely effective anti-smoking ad

I am a 52y.o. woman who started smoking at age 12. I quit for 6 years and started again during my divorce in '09. My Mom really wanted me to quit right before she passed in '18, but I was just not ready.

In '20 I was blessed with my rescue dog Rocco; he actually came to me on my 50th birthday and I believe he was a 'gift' from my departed mother. He's had two families and a foster so I am his last stop and I take that very seriously.

I was diagnosed with PTSD in '15 and I didn't go outside a lot because of it; I used to do Triathlons and all kinds of outdoor activities prior. Rocco changed my life by giving me the confidence to go out and enjoy nature again; he restored my soul. Even though I get grumpy when it's cold (Minnesota, here) he never fails to make me smile with his enthusiasm. He is the reason I survived my mother's passing and a big part of why I stay sober/clean today; I have 5 years of recovery under my belt.

In September '22 I was diagnosed with HPV related Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the anus. So, anal cancer. 'Cause that's so fun to talk about, right!? I guess if anyone can, it's me. The point here is that HPV and SCC are smoking related. So, I finally quit on February 13th 2023! At a recent doctor's appointment, when the nurse interlaced her fingers and said "HPV and Nicotine are like this," I knew I was done for good.

Currently I am back in training for the very same Triathlon I did for the first time over 20 years ago! I am taking Rocco on longer and longer walks and plan to start hiking and backpack camping with him. An exciting adventure in Colorado awaits us this Fall!!

TL;DR Get the HPV vaccine if it's available. If you're struggling with nicotine addiction, just keep trying to quit - someday you may surprise yourself. And, of course, rescue a best friend if you can because that's the real life-changer.
