Three gypsy women being beaten in Paris by Chinese merchants after they were apparently caught stealing

Gypsies (officially the Roma) are actually an ethnic group of nomadic people spread all over Europe, that are originally from parts of what is today India and Pakistan. Most of them are concentrated in parts of Eastern Europe, especially Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria and Slovakia.

Many people believe their way of life and culture makes them totally unsuitable to live in any civilised, normal society.

Just to give some examples:

  • Their culture doesn't value formal education at all, they only send their children to school just so they get financial support from the state. Proof of this is that gypsy children have small attendance rates and very often failing grades. It's very rare to see gypsies studying in universities, despite many states have special programs to allow gypsies in universities for free even if they don't have good grades. Most of the places remain unoccupied.

  • They still practice arranged marriages, girls as young as twelve are often forced to marry, the family of the groom usually paying large sums of money (sometimes more than €20.000) to the family of the bride.

  • In rural communities, they often survive by stealing from farmers or stealing scrap metal. This is also true for industrial areas. Sometimes they even steal cables or pipes, damaging public infrastructure - just a few months ago, a hospital in Romania was left without running water because some gypsies stole some pipes.

  • Most of them steal whatever they can get their hands on. Even gypsies often admit that most gypsies steal

  • When they don't steal, some of their other favourite activities include singing and begging.

  • Of course they really love to play victim when it's in their favour.

These are just my subjective conclusions drawn from living in a country where there are, officially 500,000 Gypsies or Romas, but unofficially, a couple of million. I see them almost every day, I see stuff about them on TV, the radio, the internet and from what I can tell they are making absolutely no effort for changing their situation and always pass the blame on someone else. First they ran to countries like France, Italy, Britain, Sweden etc. where they complained they were discriminated against in Romania. Now they're saying they're being oppressed in those countries. Simply put, nobody likes them.

That's not to say there aren't any decent Roma people though, there are, but their numbers are thin.
