Tips for Volunteer Photographing for Find a Grave?

Have you ever been approached by anyone in a cemetery wanting to know what you were doing? What did you tell them, and how did they respond?

I have. I've had some very nice chats with people about what I'm working on, and made a couple of friends. Be nice to any cemetery workers you meet. Politeness goes a long way.

are there any additional details you record?

Condition of the headstone. Is it broken, chipped, split in half? This isn't always necessary, but it comes in handy at times.

One thing I always do - stay away from areas where funerals might be going on, if it's an active cemetery. I stay at least one or two city blocks away. Mourners are there for a more important reason than I am. I also move off if people start coming to visit in the area I'm in.
