Director Sam Raimi brings his trademark comic book-influenced visual panache to this post-modern Western. Sharon Stone stars as Ellen, a mysterious female gunslinger who arrives in the frontier hamlet of Redemption for a contest pitting quick-draw artists against each other. The event is the brainchild of Redemption s evil, corrupt mayor, Herod (Gene Hackman), a criminal who has taken over the town and charges a 50% tax on local businesses. The Quick and the Dead wanders onto Blu-ray with a strong 1080p, 1.85:1-framed transfer. Despite the presence of some edge enhancement, The Quick and the Dead marks yet another Sony title that retains the look of film and features plenty of natural film grain over the entirety of the image. The film features a typical-of-Westerns dusty, worn appearance. Colors are naturally dim; only the bright blue sky seen in some scenes lends even a hint of vibrancy and contrast to an otherwise brown and tan-dominated palette that make up the majority of clothing, building façades, and the dirt road. Fine detail looks wonderful, and the lack of grain reduction allows the image to retain every nuance in every frame. Flashbacks reveal that The Lady s true name is Ellen, and she had grown up in Redemption, where her father was the town s Marshal. One day Herod and his men invaded the town, killed all the deputies and tied her father to the gallows. Herod gave Ellen a gun and offered to let her shoot the rope and free him. However, she missed and killed her father instead. He hands the gun to Young Ellen The Lady (Stacy Linn Ramsower) and says she has three shots to shoot the rope of the hangman s noose wrapped around her father s neck. It was restored for the home cinema releases of the film. It s no surprise as to who is left standing, but he certainly leads the audience to believe that almost any outcome is possible. The badly dilapidated pistol that Herod buys from Fee Herod for Cort to use in the contest is a model 1851 Colt Navy cap and ball revolver that has been converted to use metallic cartridges. The film eventually grossed $18,636,537 in revenue and was declared to be a box office bomb. Principal photography for The Quick and the Dead lasted from November 21, 1993 to February 27, 1994. Locations included Old Tucson Studios in Arizona and Mescal, 40 miles southeast of Tucson. Production was briefly halted at times over weather problems. Thell Reed, who was hired as the gun coach and weapons master, worked with the cast through over three months of training. To age Cort s Colt 1851 Navy Revolver and the other guns used, Reed experimented with simple measures.
