What are your best unassuming wealthy stories?

Actually, I come from no money at all. Most of my ancestors are hardscrabble farmers and government workers. Nobody in my family ever had serious money, and my dad died deeply in debt. One of the reasons I worked hard to make money was to achieve the financial security I lacked as a child.

I don't pretend that an inquisitive person couldn't find out I live in a big house. They wouldn't know how much I've spent on it, but the footprint size is available in the public record.

But, again, in the realm of wealth everything is relative. A person from Sudan might think the average American is wealthy beyond imagining. I look at rich guys I know (one who has a single home that cost $100+ million) and my house looks like a starter shack. It's all relative. My simple point is that people who make far less money than me own far larger homes than me. If you were going to try and guess my net worth based on the house I own, you'd probably underestimate my net worth.

I would respectfully suggest that the hostility shown in this subreddit towards achieving real wealth is somewhat at odds with the goal of attaining financial independence.

People also tend to buy the myths that support the whole humble billionaire thing. Yes, Warren Buffett has retained his (not that modest) 6,500sf home in Omaha. But, he flies his private jet to his $10+ million home in Laguna Beach. And you know what I say: Good for him.
