The DSM-V criteria for substance abuse/dependency is very fucking flawed and open to interpretation.
I was labelled the same, even though I held a valid prescription for 2 years before some resident psychiatrist at a hospital (I didn't have insurance so had to use them for psych services) decided to label me as such. It took 1.5yrs and 3 other doctors to undo the damage that label did to me, and my file. I had never, ever, abused any form of intoxicants - be it alcohol, hard drugs, pills, etc. In fact I abstain from everything other than cannabis.
The criteria used to label me as such? Here we are:
https://www.verywellmind.com/dsm-5-criteria-for-substance-use-disorders-21926
Notice how easy it is to label one as having a disorder?
#1 "Cravings to use substance" Well duh, it helps me sleep unlike any other pills I was given. Of course I crave it, because without it I must face demons that no one else see's or understands.
#6 "Using substances even when it puts you in danger" Medical cannabis was unaffordable to me at the time of seeing this psych. Thus, I used the BM. He felt the BM put me and my family in danger.
Those 2 were cited as the reasons I had a disorder. Not a single health professional has agreed with this position since.
All that to say - OP, I feel for you. And it's going to take a while to shake that label off. But you can. What you need to do is find doctors who are sympathetic to your condition and are open/ok with cannabis as medication. Those are the ones that will help. If you can, bring literature with you. I found it surprising that my doctors didn't know Veterans Affairs covered cannabis for PTSD. They also didn't know about all the wonderful studies I brought them done by the VA in the USA with Afghanistan/Iraq war veterans.
Unfortunately you're fighting an uphill battle. And I wish you the very best of luck - sincerely.
