You really the term used to be “mentally disabled.” And I grew up with a mentally disabled person in my house and we read literature about the mentally disabled and nowhere was the term “cognitive disabilities.” So that’s a more updated term that means the same thing. And one day, they will change it again and tell you that the term “cognitive disabilities” is ableist. Why dont you get real-life experience instead of thinking that words mean everything instead of how someone treats someone in the world. Do you go to businesses to make sure a relative can get in and out? Or that my other relative has the equipment as well as a state aid to help her through her day? Or that you watched them graduate community college because of a family effort, and now they work? No… you just care about a new term that you think fixes a problem. Do you know the history of legislation in your state and in this country for disabled people? Do you think my relative gives a crap whether it’s mentally disabled or cognitive disability? Who in the world gives a crap about that difference. Uck, this makes me so mad.
