[–]Celticsdangercart 60 points an hour ago* Think about it this way: right now they have Varejao for $9.6M this year and next plus JR Smith is probably holding them hostage for ~$10M/year. If they dump Varejao, who they don't need with Mozgov and Thompson to play center, and are able to cut ties with JR by adding Joe Johnson at $24M then it only adds around $5M in salary. If they can then get David West at the minimum that's $6M to upgrade JR and Varejao to Johnson and West which is an extremely good use of that Haywood contract. The problem is the Nets. They can actually get cap space next season because of the cap jump. The TV deal potentially gave them a Get Out of Jail Free card and now they might trade some of that away for short-term tax savings in a year where they lose their pick no matter what. EDIT: Estimate for: Sign JR, Keep Varejao, Trade Haywood for ~$8M Metric Total Current Contracts: $122,904,764 Amount Over Cap: 53,904,764 Amount Over Tax Line: 39,404,764 Tax Bill: 131,875,011 Total Team Spend: 254,779,775 Roster Count: 14 Status: Above Tax & Apron Build Result: Pass Estimate for: Trade Haywood+Varejao for Johnson, Sign West, Let JR leave Metric Total Current Contracts: $123,416,316 Amount Over Cap: 54,416,316 Amount Over Tax Line: 39,916,316 Tax Bill: 134,560,659 Total Team Spend: 257,976,975 Roster Count: 14 Status: Above Tax & Apron Estimate for: Keep Varejao, Trade Haywood+JR S&T for Johnson (I think this violated the BYC rule) Metric Total Current Contracts: $132,107,594 Amount Over Cap: 63,107,594 Amount Over Tax Line: 48,607,594 Tax Bill: 186,297,463 Total Team Spend: 318,405,057 Roster Count: 14 Status: Above Tax & Apron Build Result: Pass Trading Haywood and Varejao would not cost much if it meant not re-signing JR and not using Haywood for anything else. EDIT 2: Including JR Smith in a sign-and trade probably doesn't work. If his new contract were enough to make a trade match it would turn him into a Base Year Compensation player and revert his trade value to his 2014-15 salary which is almost $3M short of a trade match. Maybe you could add another player in a second S&T... I think this really only works with Varejao involved and no he can't be cut and then return to the Cavs this year.
