As writers what do you all think of political correctness?

"Political correctness" is such an amorphous, poorly-defined term that it almost seems helpful here to ask about what you're referring to.

For example, a lot of people invoke not being "PC" when they're basically writing the literary equivalent of some Reddit edgelord's post. They think that they're being heroic and pushing boundaries when their writing just ends up coming across as immature and self-consciously edgy. I mean, Sin City isn't "PC;" but in terms of actually challenging the viewer or conveying anything truly relevant it's pretty elementary school-level. I've read submissions, and plenty of people turn in "edgy" crime stories full of slurs and rape—they're not being "PC" but the writing and plots are also bottom-of-the-barrel garbage.

And at the same time, plenty of people who are just about the most radically progressive and inclusive people on the planet write transgressive works full of taboos and challenging themes and ideas. And it's very common within that worldview to write characters or situations or dialogue which reflects some "un-PC" view without being an asshat yourself. I mean, Alan Moore's about as left-wing and inclusive as they come in the mainstream and he wrote Rorschach.

We have a tendency to equate the preferences of various groups who find something distasteful, lump them all together and call that whole influence "political correctness" as some proxy term for having our natural artistic inclinations subverted or tampered. But somebody saying "Eh, this bugs me because I feel like I'm being marginalized when I read it" isn't really any different than any other criticism of plot or character or art—it can be considered or considered and disregarded, but more experienced and thoughtful writers will at least mull over feedback they receive along those lines. Being "PC" or not is entirely divorced from quality itself.
