I've used it in some of my academic writing as a bit of an aside. Sometimes there's something that doesn't really need to be said but it's a little interesting or humorous or, most often, breaks the fourth wall.

I stopped doing it because I think I had fallen into a certain common trap. You see it done and it seems like clever wordsmithing but then as you see more and more of it, you realize it's actually more of a style for people who want to be clever but don't want to put any real thought into it.

I still like to see it now and then but as a writing trick it got old fast like a top 40 song. I don't have patience for seeing it spammed because it gives me a bit of secondhand embarrassment from the above point
