[WW2] I was left a few medals from an old family friend, a Commander in the British Army, help me identify and appreciate them more

1. The France and Germany Star was one of the 9 “Star” campaign medals awarded British subjects, specifically for service in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands or Germany and adjacent sea areas between 6 June 1944 and 8 May 1945. It was approved in 1945.

2 The War Medal 1939–1945 is a United Kingdom campaign medal which was approved on16 August 1945, and which was awarded to subjects of the Commonwealth who had served for at least 28 days between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945 in either the Armed Forces or the Merchant Navy. It should have a ribbon colored, from the left as you view it, Wide Red, Wide Blue, Narrow white, Narrow Red, Wide Blue, Wide Red

3-- The 1939–1945 Star is a military campaign medal, instituted by the United Kingdom on 8 July 1943 for award to subjects of the British Commonwealth for service in the Second World War. Two metallic clasps were approved to be worn on the medal ribbon, the “Battle of Britain” and the “Bomber Command Clasp”. Its ribbon should be colored, from the left as you view it, Wide dark Blue, Wide Red, Wide light blue. Of all the campaign stars, only the 1939–1945 Star covered the full duration of the Second World War from its outbreak on 3 September 1939 to the victory over Japan on 2 September 1945.

4—The one with George on the face and “for efficient service” on the reverse (ribbon narrow yellow, wide green, narrow yellow), is the “Efficiency Medal”, which was instituted in 1930 for award to reserve warrant officers, non-commissioned officers and men after twelve years of efficient service on the active list of the Militia or the Territorial Army of the United Kingdom (similar to the National Guard of the United States), or of similar Auxiliary Forces throughout the entire British Empire. At the same time a metallic clasp which could be placed on the ribbon was instituted for award to holders of the medal upon completion of additional periods of six years of service.

This medal superseded multiple earlier medals, including the Volunteer Long Service Medal, the Volunteer Long Service Medal for India and the Colonies, the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Medal, the Militia Long Service Medal, the Special Reserve Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, and the Territorial Efficiency Medal. # 5-- The Defence Medal is a campaign medal which was instituted by the United Kingdom in May 1945, to be awarded to subjects of the British Commonwealth for both non-operational military and certain types of civilian service during the Second World War. All of these except the Efficiency Medal are campaign medals representing the locations in which the awardee served during WW2. They do not represent individual gallantry awards. OK, this time it came out formatted correctly.
