This is the 6th year in a row where the grand final involves an interstate team vs a Melbourne-based club. 4 out of the 6 times, the interstate side finished higher than their Melbourne-based counterpart. A Collingwood premiership would make it 6-0 for the Melbourne-based teams.

Whine, whine, whine, all you non-Victorians ever do. Tell you what since you’re so great, go back to your own league, get lots of clubs to join, have your own GF in Perth or Adelaide or wherever and make the Victorians come to it if they want to win. What you have to realise is that profit, power and prestige is why they do it and not (as the naive would hope) love of football. Do you think any sport is different? Maybe F1, A-League, V8 Supercars?

With your pure love of football and fair play surely you will triumph if you challenge the AFL. Call your new league the National Football League maybe - you could even start out with teams from Tasmania and NT, get a jump on the establishment! So go ahead and build that league. Until you do you’re beggars, which as the old saying goes, means you’re not choosers. Or as the Prime Minister told the Tasmanian Treasurer recently, a “****ing mendicant”.

Further, consider why we even have interstate teams - it’s not for love of our wide brown land I assure you. It’s to ensure that AFL is our national sport and that there’s a following everywhere, and some other sport doesn’t end up with all the $$$. Now given the “successes” of NRL and A-League in drawing the big crowds, ask yourself the question: could the AFL afford to lose an interstate club, or even all of them? Sadly the answer is “yes, with some small inconvenience”. Until this changes we will have interstate clubs whining, but you’re just not going to get anything better until the AFL sees what’s in it for them.
