Bi-Weekly CAREERS Mega-Thread [Apr 04 2016]

Hello!

I am finally advancing in my career and great opportunities lie ahead for me! I was hoping for some input from different view points of people who are further along their career paths and have a greater insight on to how my career will play out.

Currently I work as a temp for a large and successful privately owned company. The likely hood of my being hired is very high and the company offers very good benefits, including a pension and yearly bonus. I am currently in a subset of the engineering department, and work as a customer support and warranty/warranty investigation personnel. The likelihood of me moving to the engineering or R&D department is likely. I have an opportunity to get my PE (I have my EIT/FE Certification) here and well as a fire investigation certification which would be really cool.

There is another company that is interested in me for a field service technician position. The company is a very successful corporate company. The pay here is significantly better (about a $12k bump plus overtime which will occur, and mileage compensation for on call situations), but the benefits are not on par in my opinion (no pension or bonus). The interest here is that it I will instantly be in a more engineering role and get the experience I need to grow as an engineer. Advancement is likely as long as I perform and willingness to relocate will play an advantage. The biggest thing holding me back is that I don't really care for working in a plant environment, I've been there before and it just doesn't interest me. I don't mind traveling and on the field type positions, just the plant environment drags on me. It's not something

I view both of these choices more as career paths than just a job. I plan to
