Breakfast in the Holdfast

Her question was a logical one, and really, she was right that he ought to be considering that. Even though Vaella was the elder sister, he couldn't seriously consider making a marriage alliance with her hand unless she drastically mended her behavior. He worried that any future spouse would consider it an insult rather than an honor if continued to behave the way she had been recently.

"No, I've not, truth be told. Are there any potential suitors that I ought to be considering?" He didn't know if anyone had caught her eye yet. The idea of inviting her to join him had seemed like a much simpler prospect before she'd actually arrived. They hadn't been terribly close in the past, but he was feeling lost for a way to bridge the gap somewhat.

"You were honest with me at the feast, Helaena, and you have no idea how much I value people willing to tell me the truth instead of merely what they think I want to hear. People are quick to praise me for my wisdom," to the point that it was starting to annoy him, "and I can't say that I've done anything to earn that."

He shook his head at that thought. "Lord Harlon Umber of Last Hearth has been arrested on suspicion of treason for conspiring to overthrow the Starks, spread chaos throughout the Realm, and secede from the kingdom to rule over an independent North. Lord Greyjoy and Lady Bolton came forward to inform me of this plot. Lord Greyjoy also had a letter in his possession from Lord Umber inviting the him to a prayer meeting in the Godswood here in the Keep. Furthermore, Lord Greyjoy said Lord Umber offered his sister's hand in marriage to the Lord Reaper."

"I summoned Lady Stark after I sent the Goldcloaks to arrest Lord Umber, and she was quite badly shaken when I told her that Lord Greyjoy is my principal witness right now. She told me that Lord Greyjoy proposed marriage to her recently, and that he was incensed when she refused him due to the Ironborn's reaving of the North. She stated that he told her that if she did not marry him, he'd release his people's bloodlust on the North, and threatened to slaughter her family and that he and his brothers would take turns violating her. Whether these were mere idle threats or not, it complicates how I move forward with the trial. I need Lord Greyjoy's testimony, but not to the extent that I'm willing to turn a blind eye to threats of war. It seems that the most prudent thing to do would be to wait until after his testimony is secured and only then remind him of the consequences of violating the peace. What do you make of it, Helaena?"
