Can someone explain the insane amount of hate that the Ghostbusters reboot is receiving despite barely anything about the film having been released?

What movies are you talking about?

May I offer some suggestions on their behalf?

'The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert', The Birdcage, 'To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar', Stardust (humorously), maybe Moulin Rouge, all feature notably flamboyant gay characters. Lawless is a recent example with a sissy villain or depraved homosexual.

Most major films that feature (token?) gay supporting characters tend to use 'flamboyant' for quick and easy characterization. I can't think of a blockbuster offhand with one as lead, not even 'Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang', but maybe there's a few that feature gay side characters that aren't 'flaming'. A token gay in a blockbuster is Marty Gilbert in Independence Day (now the upcoming sequel will feature a gay couple. Progress!)

Blue is the Warmest Color

Is very far from the model of a Hollywood blockbuster like Ghostbusters. Risqué pseudo-pornographic homosexuality relegates it to a niche North American audience, like some obscure Netflix list of independent films. Carol is probably a quality film, but a boxoffice flop, possibly a vanity project. The Duke of Burgandy makes Carol look like a hit. I hope that wasn't someones life savings.

None of them are comedies or blockbusters, and aren't really comparable to one appealing to an audience from children to adults. The PP seems correct, that swapping out the male roles in GB for women seems mostly a gimmicky afterthought. A bit like variant Shakespearean productions (Set in present day! In Japan! During the cold war! color inverted! etc). Hopefully pandering to the female demographic doesn't alienate the male one too much in the process.
