Click a button inside an app or webpage?

Is there something obvious I'm missing here with AutoInput?

I went to 'Manage Input Actions' and did the whole deal where you get to the app you want, tell it to start monitoring, then tap the element you want it to recognize. It switches to the Recent Apps view and asks me to tape AutoInput. It then verifies which element I selected and asks me -- twice -- what action I want performed (Click).

I tried having the requested app open in the foreground, ready to click, turned the screen off.
My task is:
Turn screen on
Wait 2 seconds
Perform that stored AutoInput click
Turn screen off

Every single time it'll fail to click. The element isn't moving. The screen turns on with the desired app in the foreground. Running Android 6.0.1, no screen lock, battery optimization turned off for Tasker and AutoInput.
