You make a great point -- yes, a lot of people are being set up for a disappointment, especially those who might not understand that the rhetoric is just a negotiation tactic.

Even though Rhode Island is blue, it's actually a very "purple" state. The Democratic Party here is not aligned with the national platform. In fact, a third of the party is endorsed by Right to Life, and the most powerful Democrat in the state, Speaker Mattiello, is endorsed by the National Rifle Association. The previous Speaker also lobbies for the NRA. Here, in RI, some Democrats campaign against undocumented immigrants. It's quite fascinating how different our states are politically, even though they're both majority Democratic.
