Coming from WoWS. How similar are the game mechanics here?

Like Vandrel said, it's closer to World of Warplanes than to World of Tanks.

As AvatarofMomus said, "crew" is very different. WoWS only has one crew position - the commander. As they get experience, they grant bonus skills once you earn the points to buy them.

WoT has multiple crew positions. Those crew members have a base training level that affects the position's skills - commander would affect spotting range, loader would affect reload time, etc.

Once that value's worked up to 100%, experience accrues towards perks & skills. These are like WoWS skills (they grant an extra bonus to some tank function or add a special ability), and each position has different ones available to it. Perks require you to completely "level up" before they kick in; skills are like base training, in that their effect grows as the skill works to 100%.

Other differences:

  1. In WoT, you have a limited amount of ammunition per match. In WoWS, you have unlimited ammo (like WoWP).
  2. In WoT, repair kits and the like cost money and only work once per battle. You have 3 slots for consumables that can hold different types of items. In WoWS, the "repair kit" is replaced by the damage control crew that regenerates itself over time.
  3. In WoT, you can fire before your gun lines up on your target reticle - it'll fire at whatever the barrel is currently pointing at.
  4. In WoT, W and S don't set your desired speed - they're forwards and backwards, and you stop moving when you let go. R and F are cruise control - forwards and backwards, respectively.
  5. In WoWS, HE is the default ammo (I'm new to the game, but I feel like AP is only used against BBs). In WoT, for most tanks AP is the default. There's also premium ammo, but for more info there you're better off reading the wiki.
