Could anyone direct me to some literature or resources on how to deduce where fish would likely be under water?

I say this with sincere seriousness; Get a castable fish finder. I have a Deeper Sonar Pro+. It maps water, gives temps, shows weeds and structure... and... It marks fish. You can cast it from shore or use it in a boat/kayak/canoe. Anglers in Bass Boats, Kayak Anglers and others use mounted fish finders/sonar when on the water, why not use something similar from shore?

I have mostly used mine in a boat, but I do still hit shore spots on ponds, lakes, rivers and streams. Now I don't waste time fanning an area where there are no fish. I cast mine out and scan the area. If I don't mark fish, I move to the next hole. So instead of 15 to 20 minutes casting with no results, I can hit 4 or 5 holes in the same amount of time and fish the ones where fish are actually present. Even if a spot has held fish before or it has all the right characteristics to hold fish, that doesn't mean fish will be there at that precise moment you are.

The Deeper is a bit pricey compared to other castable fish finders, but it's the best one out there and I did a ton of research before pulling the trigger on it. If you get one, you won't be disappointed.
