Crossing Guard @ 21st and Astoria Blvd

Oh, I know who you're talking about. Ok I have thought about this crossing guard a lot.

First, I'll say - she is 90% really good at her job. (I mean, if you want to go into poorly designed intersections, lack of reckless driving enforcement, why we need them in the first place - different story) BUT for being a physical human who escorts kids across intersections safely, she's good at her job. She says good morning to every kid, makes small talk, hustles out to meet them at the other side of the intersection, holds back cars to let parents with strollers finish crossing - she's the kind of presence you want. She cares! That's important.

But that fucking whistle. Rips it every light cycle for her entire shift, and it's deafening. I cover my ear when I'm waiting to cross. I genuinely pity anyone who lives above her post - it's gotta be so toxic. But I'm quite sure she thinks it helps.

So, I suggest as a good citizen, you approach her with the attitude that you recognize she's a real champ and looking out for the little ones in the neighborhood, but that you can hear it inside your apartment. Do this on your way to the coffee shop and ask if you can bring her anything back. Acknowledge that her heart is in the right place but that you two should come to terms on a resolution. Definitely not "Karen" if you recognize that you're both part of the community and trying to get along. Good luck.
