Title: I Am the King of Nowhere

Type of feedback: Mostly whether or not it's interesting! Also, very specifically, whether I ought to vary my sentence structure more.

The gravedigger worked for free that morning. He worked for free the night before, too, having only taken a short break to choke down a few spoonfuls of cold stew. No time to start a fire. In the grand scheme of things, faced with the magnitude of it all, the temperature of his stew had been rendered insignificant.

He looked out across the field, where the first rays of morning sunlight poured onto the reeds and the grass and the thatched-roof cottages lining the farmland. Blood stained the land red. Graves, shallow and unfilled, littered the landscape.

The gravedigger dragged his arm across his forehead, wicking away the sweat. It was all dirt and grime and blood and sweat, and it would be for days on end.

And he’d work for free those days, too.

There’s no use waiting, he thought. Best get to work before it gets too hot. There is only so much work a gravedigger can do by moonlight; he had spent all night digging graves. Now he would spend all day filling them.
