If we can get enough nodes up and running and prove that how long it takes to sync a node isn't a factor in whether people will run one or not, Core might consider raising blocksize in addition to the Segwit and Lightning improvements.

It is not just about disk space and sync time, it is also about bandwidth usage and increased CPU strain (yes, your cpu won't be able to keep up anymore if it has to process large blocks). The entire cost of running a node increases with a blocksize increase.

Core does not need to be convinced of anything, they know exactly what they are doing. The idea that some randoms on reddit can convince them of anything is ludicrous.
