Now, does that mean Greensboro, and Winston Salem aren’t good cities? Heck no! Greensboro will sometimes get big things sometimes Winston Salem will occasionally get big things I mean my gosh they had Paul McCartney in Winston Salem that’s really big for Winston Salem! I mean my gosh are you kidding me? The Beatle himself that is huge! Paul McCartney came to Winston Salem this past summer. That was huge that was on the got back tour! He played at the football stadium at Wake Forest! Guns and roses also came they are, and so did Billy Joel those were both very big also! They were huge actually to have guns and roses perform is big time I mean so is Billy Joel! Winston Salem has had its share of major events just look at the tennis tournament our own Greensboro native John Isner played in it. How about when they had the major cycling bicycle race national championships that one late spring early summer? Three years prior to it was in Denver Colorado it went through the Buena Vista neighborhood in Winston Salem that was huge it was televised live on streaming how about when Hillary Clinton, and Michelle Obama spoke at the Joel coliseum the year 2016 during House Bill 2 that was all over the news it was on CNN it was on C-SPAN it was on Fox it was on CBS it was on NBC it was on MSNBC it was on PBS every news channel interrupted TV to cover it live it was on the campaign trail it was a big deal for Winston Salem! How about when they had college game day during the Covid year? How about when they had Donald Trump that same week? Also, how about when Winston Salem had President Obama at Forsyth tech? How about the 2000 presidential debate with George W. Bush, and Al Gore? Yes they have had March madness the NCAA tournament on three occasions in fat Carolina was the Number one seed they played eastern Kentucky who is number 16 that could have been sort of like UMBC so yes Winston Salem has had its share of big things, and I bet they will have more in the future. How about when Elton John came? He performed the week after Princess Diana died Lady Di. That was gigantic! How about when they had the PGA championship out at Tanglewood? How about the AJGA Wyndham Junior golf tournament at wake forest several years ago? It was not a PGA event but it was pretty large actually the golf channel was there broadcasting it. That’s a big deal! As I said Oklahoma came to the Stevens center that counts. Winston Salem also had the Davis cup tennis tournament in 2007 Patrick McEnroe was there that’s pretty awesome James Blake played in it, and so did Andy Roddick that was pretty cool. The Winston Salem open had Andy Murray a few years ago! Having the Davis cup was not the crowd of Arthur Ashe Stadium with a very big crowd The largest in tennis but it was absolutely a big crowd for the Davis cup in Winston Salem that was really really really big it was not when Pete Sampras retired at Flushing Meadows at Arthur Ashe in the early 2000s but it was pretty darn huge! I mean it was almost that big having the Davis cup in Winston Salem packed the Joel Coliseum my gosh! It brought people downtown I remember it downtown was lively! I mean having the Davis cup packed The LJVM Coliseum to the brim it was pretty impressive it was the United States versus France it was actually no fly by night tennis tournament! How about when they had the Crosby clambake tournament in golf? It was sort of like the thing we make fun of about Charles Barkley in Lake Tahoe it was sort of like that so absolutely Winston Salem absolutely has had its share over the years of major events! Winston Salem also had a dog show there at the Annex this past year it was not the Westminster but it was a small dog show it was the best in show it was a miniature best in show they used the LJVM Coliseum for the parking. I mean Winston Salem also one time I remember had the Montreal Xpoes play the Minnesota twins in Major League Baseball at the old ballpark Ernie Shore Field prior to The Dash. It wasn’t the Houston Astros versus the New York Yankees or the Atlanta Braves versus the Cleveland Indians or the World Series for that matter or anything like that but it was a big huge baseball game major league I’m talking for a minor-league park for a city like Winston Salem it was big that was huge! The governor of North Carolina at the time Governor Hunt flew on the diamond in a helicopter. That was serious business for Winston Salem. How about when Peter Frampton performed 12 years or so ago at Ziggy’s? How about the O.J. Simpson trials in Winston Salem at Winston Salem State University? How about scenes from the movie Mr. Destiny with Jim Belushi? How about when George W. Bush came to speak after 9/11? He spoke at the Joel in front of local schools all across the triad to address the war on terror it was a big deal that was huge I mean it was two months after three months after 9/11. Even more it was part of the state of the union address in Washington, DC I mean he came to the Joel 13 hours after that it was an extended part of his State of the Union tour to speak about homeland security. I mean he chose Winston Salem because of Richard Burr out of Several cities to stop in that day. How about the longest ride bull riding movie with Nicholas Sparks? Winston Salem had an NBA game recently they had the Charlotte hornets versus the Philadelphia 76ers right before Covid the year of Covid the year the NBA suspended its season it wasn’t the NBA All-Star game in Charlotte but for Winston Salem that was pretty impressive it was definitely an NBA game but it was an exhibition game it was at the Joel. How about Maya Angelou‘s funeral at wake forest in 2014 that was all over TV it was a live televised funeral when she was laid to rest! Michelle Obama attended that one too. She spoke at Wait Chapel. The Miami Marlins also played at grasshoppers stadium. Same with Greensboro. We have had so many things at the Coliseum. James Taylor twice, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, twenty one pilots, Shania Twain, Zac Brown, The ACC tournament every year almost it’s called tournament town for a reason, The NCAA it’s coming back this year, every year we have the Wyndham golf tournament, and we have had other events so many others we have had our share for sure one time the Jackson 5 came to Greensboro Coliseum as well as the Eagles the Eagles, and Don Henley have preformed at Greensboro Coliseum as well as all of our Steven Tanger Center, Broadway performances lately we have also had Elton John two or three times we have also had the NCAA division two swimming championships Steely Dan has performed in Greensboro at the amphitheater at the Coliseum we have had our share through the years! Greensboro Airport is not Charlotte PTI is nice though it’s growing we are getting ready to have maybe that jet that supersonic jet they were talking about essentially. Sure we have had our share we have had many things in Greensboro let alone in Winston Salem they have had some too but nothing like Charlotte. We have had our share for big events, and so has Winston Salem to an extent but we will never be Charlotte.
