[Discussion] TagGate 2015

Please don't treat us like babies. I am sure it's not meant, but it feels like it right now, with lots of deletion and new rules.

No one is trying to intentionally treat anyone like a baby. The rules have not changed very often. The main rules were setup in June of 2014, and in September of 2014 is when a noticeable difference of rules were adjusted, then once more this month. Most of the rules had always been the same, and most of it was adjusting the verbiage of the rules.

Because a lot of people ask for it, doesn't mean it's a good idea. A lot of people are idiots. You are meant to be better than that as mods. Please think about the consequences of changes and all the people not asking for them.

We 100% do think about the minority and the majority when making decisions. We have a lot of discussions in our mod sub and in side chats on what we would like to see, how it will affect everyone, etc. Due to our own personal diversity, we have a lot of varying opinions that see things from many different angles. We take all of your feedback into consideration on everything. Trust me, it isn't easy trying to find a way to please everyone.

Please find a way to put your numbers to good use, not more use. Or in others words, don't ever, ever, ever, let more mods = more rules.

I completely agree, which is why we don't do a lot of rule changes, and as I said above, we haven't. We have 10 rules right now. We used to have 14. A few of them are repeats of reddit rules.

It's OK to reverse and delete rules sometimes. Joking, but if Destiny is still going in 2018, will the rules for this place fit on one page? Please avoid rules creep.

The internet is ever changing, and so is reddit. I can guarantee you the rules will change by 2018. Not because we want to change them, but because the community will evolve, and we have to adapt. We won't change them often, as that is a VERY bad thing to do, especially without a lot of thought and discussion going into the reasoning behind the changes.

Don't try to make gold from base metals. Most people here are putting hundreds of hours into a game with a relatively small amount of content. We are also reaching a natural expansion cycle lull before HoW. This place could well be a bit boring, circular and not much fun. It is not your job to fix that.

Until we get concrete details on HoW there really isn't a great deal going on. So, for example, if people are complaining they need a tag system because they can't find "the good stuff", is this because we really need tags, or because there just aren't as many really good posts?

We try not to get in your way of freedom of speech/your ability to talk freely, however certain discussions need to happen in a single place, not just because we want to click that shiny red delete button, but it helps keep things organize for you, and mostly for us. When a hot topic is going on, it is easier for us to look at 1-2 threads than 12+ all to read about the information and follow the discussions. It means we can follow content easier. Users have also said they don't enjoy/want to see low effort/low quality/ and reposts. Those are debatable, and there is no way to get around that. We try and err on the side of caution and leave a post up and let the community downvote/report it if they don't like it, and use those to weight our decision when removing posts. Posts that start moving away from the "reminder, this info is new or has only been said a long time ago" and into the "dude, that is common knowledge" like the heavy ammo bug posts are the ones we remove. We have a lot of new users who may not have seen heard about it, which is why we let some go through to spread the info. From the outside, it may seem like we are ruling hard and removing too many posts when you see 3 of the same topic being removed, but the truth is, there were likely another 7 posts that you didn't see that we removed, and left that 11th post up.

As far as tags, they were the easiest method to allow us to automatically assign flair to a post. With flair assigned, we can then setup filters. With filters, you can hide certain topics. Users said they wanted to filter content, so that is what we gave them. Using a tag seemed like the easiest and simplest method for everyone to be able to have flair assigned with seemingly littlest effort from the user and from us mods. None of us excepted the response we got about the tags and filters and how they were implemented. I use a full browser on my phone and not any reddit app, so I had no idea about it showing double tags in the app, and same thing with most (maybe all) of the other mods. With all the feedback we have gotten, we are learning and exploring other options to add flair to enable filtering. This solution requires likely a little bit more work for you guys as you would have to click the flair button and assign your own flair, but it removes the bracketed tag from the posts, which means better readability for mobile app users.

As we have said many times, we are still discussing implementation and usability of that option, and other options to make sure the next change we make is done right, and works well. We're taking more time this go around to make sure we launch it right, so please give us a little bit of breathing room, but continue to send us civil feedback (as you have done). Thanks.
