So does the /r/dogs community honestly believe that pit bulls shouldn't even be allowed in dog parks and other public off-leash places?

Pitbulls are sweet loveable dogs just like any other dog when treated well and shown love, Any dog can be aggressive and dangerous if the owner treats them badly or trains them to be so even a minature poodle. Don't ban the dog from the enjoyment of the park, ban all the arseholes in the world who train them to fight and be aggressive from owning them.

Pitbulls ARE great dogs. They're great with humans, and some are ok or good with other dogs.

However...do you think any dog can be trained to herd sheep the way a Border Collie can? Or retrieve dogs like a machine, the way a retriever can? Do you think that a Tibetan Mastiff would make a good lap dog?

Dogs have been bred for centuries for jobs or traits. So yeah, some dogs from dog fighting roots, are not tolerant of other dogs. They can still make wonderful pets, really loving family members. But have the sense to understand that they should not be off leash in a dog park.

Not all Pit Bulls are like that: but you have to seriously know your dog and have trained him, so you don't become "surprised" at his reaction in the park.

There have been many posts here about someone taking their 11 or 12 month old dog to the park and being astonished at how, for the first time ever, their dog was bad or outright scary in the park. Those are people who thought that the dog they had at four or five months was the dog they'd always have, and they forgot, puberty.

So yes, Pits are great dogs. They are: but don't assume that just because you want it to be true, that all of them are great at social interactions with other dogs. Lots of dogs are not, but it doesn't make them bad dogs. However, it does make them a bad choice for insisting that they interact with other dogs.
