ELI5: Why are American police generally despised while the military is very highly regarded?

  1. Military are not allowed to carry weapons on American soil with few exceptions like training, MPs, Marshall Law and nuclear weapons security details. Only National Guards are allowed to carry weapons but they are controlled by the state.

  2. Military in general do more humanitarian missions than fighting missions.

  3. Military does not get to set its own mission, it comes from politicians.

  4. The military has more accountability(still not perfect) because of its 2-3 year duty station cycles. No entrenchment can happen and corruption can only last so long.

  5. The military does not enforce laws on the people.

  6. The military is an all volunteer force and the majority does believe in honor, courage and commitment(although there's plenty of bad eggs but they are easier to identify).

  7. Military servicemen have no incentives to meet certain quotas.

  8. There is generally much lower discrimination because it's mixed and people don't get to pick where they are placed so lower chances of an entire racist organization vs a police station. This is not to say there isn't discrimination, just less(I'm saying this because some nitpicky redditor will be a douche)

  9. The military in general believes in doing the right thing, have more discipline and specific missions to unify the force. PDs have a "prevent all these things" and it will be graded on meeting numbers instead of a specific goals. Therefore, they have more incentives to have questionable actions.

  10. There's respect for people who voluntarily join the military during war time knowing what they will face, the sacrifices they may have to make, and leave their family to the protect the people and the interests of the nation.
